Clone 459 allows us to focus on one distinctive voice within the broader Machado conversation. It carries Pinot Noir’s floral and red-fruited side with notable structure and depth. Rose petal, cherry, cranberry, thyme and spice meet a firm, elegant frame, offering a more detailed study of site, clone and season.

Winemaking
Only neutral Sirugue barrels are used for 12-18mos. We strive for whole cluster fermentation. We farm with a focus of ripening the stems alongside the fruit, allowing the cluster to be in harmony. Working with the stems allows for wines that are structured, earthy and balanced with our beautiful SRH fruit. We often use the analogy of roasting fish or meat on the bone, the bone offers complex flavors very different than taking it off of the bone to cook it. All of the single vineyard wines are produced with the intention of aging and cellaring for at least 10 years and can easily be enjoyed after 15 years.
Vineyard
This bottling is comprised of clone 459 pinot noir from our Machado vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills. 459 exhibits a deep, and carnal expression of fruit with balanced spice.

15-acre parcel on the Machado family land is located adjacent to Clos Pepe and immediately behind the Kessler-Haak vineyard. The site is marked by a gorgeous rolling terrain with sandy clay loam soils.
